What's this About?

Once upon a time there were people who worked for large companies who were put in charge of growing their web presence online. They were traditional marketing professionals educated with PHD's schooled on the best ways to send print catalogs and build powerpoint presentations. They were the ones put in charge of the corporate website.

One day they caught wind of the importance of web analytics. They found out that you can actually know a little bit about who comes to your website and what they do when they're there. So they ventured down to the IT department, the land of milk and honey, and told them that they wanted data. (They wanted marketing data FROM THE IT guys!) The IT guys, caring more about the way they accessed the data and their latest Doom score than what they actually provided, sent volumes of information back to the suits in corporate.

For years after that, the two departments bantered back and forth about acceptable ways to present this information so the suits could interpret it.They asked the IT guys which data points were most meaningful, but all the IT guys could say was 'hits!'. So the suits watched the hit number in their 11 worksheet spreadsheet file. As hits went up, they rejoiced. As they went down, they clamored for a reason blaming seasonal change or the economy while at the same time pondering why profits didn't seem to rise or fall. Meanwhile the webmaster was unknowingly changing the 'hit' counter each time he added a graphic, or did a complete redesign.

That's the way it was. The days when the suits went about marketing their sites on the internet like blind men playing tennis. You see, they didn't know how to grow their site because they were looking at the wrong data points and they couldn't see the forest for the trees. They literally could not plan the next months activities because they were never sure about where they were.

Thankfully now, you don't have to make the same mistake.
